We were delighted to welcome Richard Lochhead, Minister for Business and Employment, to our Edinburgh centre this week.
During his visit, Richard met members of the Smart Works Scotland team to learn more about our work supporting unemployed women across Scotland into employment through coaching, clothing, and confidence. He was given a tour of the centre, and met staff and volunteers who are at the heart of bringing our transformational service to life.
We also had the opportunity to discuss the challenges facing women in the job market today, and the importance of our confidence-building service to help women unlock their potential. In our recent Unemployment Index, it was revealed that the employment landscape is now more challenging than ever before, for example 27% of our clients have applied for over 50 roles unsuccessfully, compared to 21% in 2023 and 16% in 2022. As a result of our help, 67% of women get the job within just one month of their appointment.
The Minister shared his support for the work we do and recognised the positive impact Smart Works Scotland has on individuals, families, and communities across the country.
Business and Employment Minister Richard Lochhead said:
“The support offered by Smart Works Scotland is empowering more women by helping them into employment. Effectively supporting women into work is one of the best ways of achieving our central priority to eradicate child poverty.
“Through our investment in parental employability support, we are removing barriers and providing tailored support to ensure that every parent in Scotland has the support they need to succeed. This is part of our wider drive to build a fairer, more inclusive labour market that enables women and families to reach their full potential.”
We are grateful for the Minister’s time and support, to help us expand our reach and empower more women into employment.
